Overview

A hospital was rolling out a new electronic health records system. Training in the live environment was impossible — the risk to real data was too high — and classroom demos didn’t build the muscle memory staff needed.

I built a high-fidelity software simulation in Storyline: a realistic, interactive replica of the new system where staff could practise the exact workflows they’d use daily, with guidance that faded as they gained confidence.

The challenge

Clinical staff needed hands-on fluency with a complex interface, but had zero tolerance for practising on real records and very little time away from the ward.

The approach

I rebuilt the critical workflows as a safe, guided sandbox — then slowly took the training wheels off.

  • Realistic replicaPixel-accurate screens of the real system, rebuilt as interactive Storyline slides.
  • Three modesWatch → Try-with-hints → Test, so confidence builds before assessment.
  • Error-safeMistakes trigger gentle correction instead of breaking the flow.
  • Role pathsSeparate tracks for nurses, admin and physicians — only the workflows each role needs.

The solution

A modular simulation covering the eight highest-frequency workflows, SCORM-packaged with bookmarking so busy staff could complete it in short bursts across shifts. Screen content was drafted rapidly with AI assistance, then clinically reviewed.
